Do you consider your body a great, blank canvass for decorating with tattoos, piercings, and other odd embellishments that didn’t come standard? Then you’re in the company of millions of people around the world in all times and all walks of life who are creators, or at least wearers, of body art. In the United States, most body art that is popular and widespread involves “getting inked” or tattooed. Once looked down upon by “civilized” members of society, or only appreciated on the forearms of enlisted sailors, tattoos can now be found on the ankles of teachers, the shoulders of doctors, or the buttocks of lawyers. Many people view tattoos as a way to express themselves symbolically, with or without words associated. More popular in recent years have been images and words blended together, either with colorful inks or simple black, in swirling and hard to decipher shapes.

Some people still stick to the more traditional “single symbol” tattoo style: they may have a single flower, a leaf, a unicorn, or a heart or star. They may be in color, or may not be. Why is this considered art, when the person wearing it did not actually put it on themselves?

“The truth is a lot of people do design their own tattoo art work,” said Miles Husker, a tattoo parlor owner from West Virginia. ”They draw it out on paper, color it, bring it to me. I just superimpose the image on their skin.”

He did admit however that many people come in and just want to flip through a catalog and pick something out. There are also people who describe in words what they imagine, letting the tattoo artist create the art for them on paper and then, if they like it, have it permanently added to their skin.

“In that case, yeah, I guess I’m the artist and they are like a walking art show for me,” Husker added.

Does it really matter who designed the art people wear on their bodies, or is the real point of it all that it is art for art’s own sake? I think many would agree that, just like in the case of jewelry, sweaters, or designer gowns, everything we wear is some kind of artistic expression (with the exception of industrially manufactured clothing duplicated with little or no imagination.) Art is a worth end of its own accord, and the people who wear it as part of their identity are equally artist and canvass.

Art and Science of S’mores

You might not think of s’mores, that classic, campfire dessert item, as being very artistic. After all, you kind of just smoosh everything together to make them. There’s not a lot of style to it. Roasted marshmallows might take some skills, but beyond that, it’s generally just a smoosh. S’mores are linked with recreational camping outdoors. Some of the enjoyment of this easy campers’ dessert is the preparation of it. First, a simple marshmallow is toasted on a skewer (or maybe even a green branch if you’re rustic!) held just above a campfire. The inside of the marshmallow becomes soft and squishy. The heated marshmallow is taken off the skewer with two graham crackers and is sandwiched between them, with one cracker having some chocolate on it. The marshmallow, hot from the fire, is what cooks the chocolate, or melts it down nicely. If you never thought of this as art, maybe you should think again.

Unique Buildings

Have you ever seen a building and weren’t quite sure what the designer was thinking. Or seen an idea and wished that it could have been your own? There are thousands of creatively designed buildings all over the world. Some of them were built the way they are for a purpose, while others are intended to be eye catching. These buildings add character to the world while providing venues for various events, and if you ever find yourself in the vicinity of one of these charming creations, do yourself a favor and drop by for a visit.

Here are just a few of the most unique buildings in the world and why they are the way they are.

The Crooked House (Sopot, Poland)- the Crooked House was constructed in 2004 by Szotyńscy Zaleski. Zaleski was mostly inspired by the children’s illustrations created by Jan Marcin Szancer for a number of fairytales, and by the artwork of Per Dahlberg as well. This house has three stories, and the way it is built within the surrounding structures makes it look as though it is skewed, warped, and somehow melted. The Crooked House in Rezydent shopping center (downtown Sopot, Poland) is now the most photographed building in that country.

Torre Galatea Figureas (Spain)- This building was build for Salvador Dali and he lived in the building until he passed away, he is buried somewhere in the main entrance of the museum. The museum’s exterior features a unique row of white eggs nestled on a red wall inlaid with gold. The Galatea tower was named after the artist’s wife, Galle. Another show-piece of the exterior’s design is a spherical dome built over a stage. The dome is now the emblem of both the city and the museum.

Pickle Barrel House (United States)- the pickle barrel house was opened on July 3, 2005. The Museum is filled with pickle merchandise and facts about pickles. There are photos inside of the Donaheys (the owners) in their unique cottage. There’s extensive material about the Teenie Weenies, cartoon characters developed by William Donahey.

Mammy’s Cupboard (United States) – Mammy’s Cupboard is an unusual restaurant built in the likeness of a 28-foot tall black woman. The restaurant is under her huge pink skirt! Located in Natchez, Mississippi, there is something note quite politically correct about this strange building and it’s structural implications. Nevertheless, the food here is reputed to be very good indeed.

When you’re on a road trip, or a journey overseas, missing out on these local spots of interest would be a shame. Before you leave, do some research ahead of time so that you’ll be ready to find the unique and interesting buildings wherever you go.

Speaking of research…I wonder how much it would cost to install an ADT home alarm system in one of these crazy buildings?

Sketching

Do all of you’re papers have doodles around the edges? Would you rather draw than sit behind a desk and do paper work? If so, you should look into a sketching career.

Sketching is something that can be used in a number of areas from designing a house to creating a comic strip. Although becoming a sketch artist is no easy task. Companies all over the country want to have the best a most appealing products available. With that being said each company must have a sketch artist coming up with new designs.

Sketching is a skill that can’t really be taught, you have to be born with the creative ability and eye for capturing an image. Drawing techniques can be taught and modified but most artist have a natural talent. Sketch artists can take a number of career paths ranging from drafters drawing floor plans to illustrators of books.

If you don’t have the natural ability to draw images free hand, computer graphics is an alternate to sketching. Why is sketching important? Sketching is important because it’s the way that people that people communicate ideas. The saying a picture is worth a thousand words is very true when you think about it. How often can you look at a page of words and instantly understand the idea that is being presented? Even if you do read through the whole page and create a mental image it may not be the same image that is being desired. This is why sketching is so important, without it there wouldn’t be a way to exchange and present ideas to numerous people.

Other ways for sketching to be used it to illustrate ideas in books. Have you ever seen a children’s book that isn’t filled with colorful images? Of course not. When your reading a book to a child you want to be able to show them what each action looks like as it’s happening. This wouldn’t be possible without sketching.

How do make a career out of sketching? You can get a number of degrees that involve sketching. Some of the common degrees are graphic design, animation, design and technical graphics. Once you have a degree you can choose from jobs such as criminal sketching artists, illustrators, forensic artist, graphic design, animation, and technical drawing.

There are endless opportunities with several companies for sketchers. Every company from Direct TV to Burger King employees sketchers of some type.

Looking at the magnificent ancient buildings, with such detail is almost breath taking. It’s amazing to think about how many people worked to create those giant works of art. Architecture played a large role in early society. The buildings they built were intended to be there for a very long time as well as be beautiful. Unlike our rich historic buildings, today contractors and builders are focused on putting up cheap, large, and efficient buildings. Very little time is spent working on creating visually appealing details.

Architects are usually grouped into the contractor, builder category when in reality they are one of the most impressive artists with the largest masterpieces. Unlike most artists who don’t have to please others or work with criteria, architects have to fit building, owner, and contract specifications. Not to mention making the buildings beautiful and functional. They can also find satisfying careers designing products for companies like basic Direct TV or Disney World.

What do you have to do to become an architect? To become an architect you have to recieve a minimum of a bachelors degree in architecture. You can earn a Bachelors, Masters, PhD, and Doctorate in Architecture. To become a successful architect it’s recommended to have at least a bachelors specifically architecture, the higher your education degree the better off you will be as an architect. There are many schools across the country including online schools that offer degrees in architecture.

How much money does an architect make a year? When first starting out as an architect you can expect to make an average of $41,950 a year with less than one year of experience. Once you have 1-2 years of experience you can expect to make $45,749 a year. Architects with 2-3 years of experience make an average of $51,640 a year. With 3-4 years of experience you can expect to make $60,250. An architect with a minimum of 4 years experience makes an average of $72,917 a year.

There are many other career options related to an architect for example An Architectural Director who over sees several projects makes an average of 112,925 a year. Architectural Drafters make $38,526 with less than 2 years experience, $49,273 with 2-4 years of experience, and $56,351 with 4 or more years of experience, and an Architectural Manager makes an average of $98,283 a year.

Architects play a huge role in completing building projects. They talk to the client about specifications, budget and other needs, then they draw the outside and floor plan of the building, once the design has been approved the architect over sees the construction of the building to ensure that it is being build correctly.
